What I’m all about

I’m passionate about the science of learning, making study fun, and helping people to be their best selves.

Hi. I’m Dr Jane Genovese.

I’m an educator, researcher, and life-long learner.

My mission is simple: I want every person to thrive intellectually, mentally and physically.

I believe one of the keys to thriving is learning how to learn.

A little bit about me

I spend my days studying the practices of people who are disciplined, highly focused and willing to step outside their comfort zones and take risks when it comes to learning. I spend a lot of time interviewing people and reading books/journal articles on topics such as learning how to learn, the psychology of motivation, how to make and break habits, and behaviour change.

I experiment with each new idea and strategy, applying them to my own life. Once I’m satisfied that the strategies work, I make them accessible to others through presentations, online learning experiences, books, mind maps and my email newsletter. I love what I do. I’m continuously growing, expanding and getting excited by life and learning. But it wasn’t always like this.

My fork in the road

Looking back on my time in high school, it was filled with confusion and unnecessary frustration. I had no idea how to study. So naturally, I hated it.

Sure, I studied (the best I could) but I came from a place of fearing failure (“If I don’t study hard for this test, I won’t do well in school and if I don’t do well in school, I won’t get into uni. If I don’t get into uni, I won’t get a good job …” you get the idea).

The best thing about high school is I got through it! And it led to university. But my first semester of university wasn’t easy. You see, I got 1 out of 20 for my first test at law school. You read that right: 1 out of 20 (5%).

This experience was so painful that it forced me to explore more effective ways to study.

Learning how to learn improved every single area of my life. I went onto complete a double degree in law and psychology (with first class honours) and then a PhD.

So, why am I sharing this with you?

Because you wouldn’t think that someone who got only 5% on their first test at law school would go onto finish university and a doctorate.

So if you or your child or students are struggling with their studies (as I did), I want you to know you can find a way to get through this. You can learn how to study more effectively.

I do the work that I do because I don’t want other students to experience the same unnecessary pain I did when I was in high school and first year university.

I want you to thrive, experience success, and get the most out of your studies (life is too short to settle for anything else).

I’m going to take you through, step-by-step, a range of practical tools and strategies to help you study less and get more. Get more of what? More free time, more mastery of your subjects and more meaningful learning experiences.

If you’re anything like me, you want practical strategies that you can use immediately. Not boring theories and stock standard advice you’ve heard many times before.

I’ve trained thousands of students over the last few years on how to study more effectively. I’ve been a student for most of my life. I know how hard it can be. But I also know how deeply rewarding it can be, too.

Even though I completed my PhD and my university education back in 2017, this doesn’t mean my learning journey has ground to a halt (far from it). In my spare time, I enjoy taking MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses), reading, and mind mapping what I read.

I’ve presented workshops at over 50 schools, government departments and organisations in Western Australia. I feel so grateful to be able to do the work that I do.

See who I’ve worked with.
